Daya Trust in India
In India, we are partnering with Mumbai-based charity, Sakhi for Girls Education. The Girls’ Learning Centre in Mulund, a north-western slum area of Mumbai, is run by the truly inspirational Aarti Naik.
The aim of the centre is to build the capacity of girls living in the slums, provide them with educational support and guidance, and empower them to finish their schooling. Daya Trust is fully funding the centre 2012-2015.
The Centre teaches 20 girls aged between 7 and 13 years old. It operates 5.30pm-8.00pm, 5 days a week, and focuses on teaching basic literacy and numeracy skills, general science, life skills, as well as extra-curricular activities, celebrations, and confidence-building activities.
Aarti Naik, the founder of Sakhi for Girls Education, was recently voted one of the 100 Unseen Powerful Women Who Change the World. She is a true example of how education can change a girl’s life.
Daya Trust is also working with Aarti to build Sakhi for Girl Education into a sustainable organisation, with the networks, funding sources and accountability required to grow and expand and reach many more girls.
